Rev. Jesse Jackson "was a pioneering civil rights leader, Baptist minister, and politician who twice ran for U.S. president. While an undergraduate, Jesse Jackson became involved in the civil rights movement and went to Selma, Alabama, to march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in 1965. He later became a leading national spokesman for African Americans in the 1980s and was appointed special envoy to Africa before being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000."
